Kuenstlerhaus Dortmund hosting:

buchlabor / book laboratory – institute for book research
(in the course of formation)
University for Applied Sciences and Arts Dortmund

April 8 - May 13, 2011

Opening: April 8 at 20 h- parallel to the opening of film4arts

At the Kuenstlerhaus Dortmund the newly-launched Institute buchlabor will be presented by students of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Dortmund, Department of Design. Object of research is the book in its analogue and digital forms, i.e. from loose-leaf collections up to a still unresearched online medium.
One of the founding motives is the large number of book projects that arise in the design faculty within all disciplines and will find in future at the buchlabor a sustained public forum. The institute wants not only to be the platform for the output of students, but also act as an archive, network and pool of information for book designers, typographers, writers and publishers. Interviews, essays and dialogues with leading representatives of the genre are part of the concept.
For the presentation at the Künstlerhaus Dortmund a major retrospective of student work from the last five years at the Department of Design has been set in focus by the buchlabor. Book projects and publications in printed or digital form, from a researching or experimental context will invite to read, look and linger in the rooms of the Künstlerhaus Dortmund from 8th of April 2011 on.

A discussion at the 9th of April 2011, impulsed by the typographer and book designer Friedrich Forssman, Kassel (Lesetypografie, Zettel's Traum, etc.), the initiators of Spector-Books Publishing, Leipzig (liner notes, etc.) and the book designer and author Kathrin Roussel, Essen (also recht eigentlich, attitudes of book designers), provide a taste of quality of the content  and communicate the vitality of the young Institute.
