IM SCHEUSSLICHEN GARTEN (German for: At the hideous garden)
Eight contemporary comic authors

17 August - 30 September 2012

Comics are time machines. They tell stories about any subject they wish and all they need is the precise distribution of  printing ink on a flat sheet of paper, just a corner of a page in a magazine, a few pages for a booklet and heaps of ever increazing height for the expanded dramaturgy of a graphic novel, the extention of which is limited by the art of bookbinding only.
We as comic authors do not need the third dimension for our narrative aims. The book is an object an yet its appearance and haptics are best determined by nothing but the sense and poetry of the contained characters which are to be deciphered.
To utilize 3D space gives us a shiver – the comic strip with its rhythmic syntax of images and characters which are entangled like climbing plants is kindred to the poem and does not need any space. And yet the icons can in their degree of abstraction be compared to another field of art: to the theatre with its stage on which a cardboard tube transforms convincingly into a tree in much the same way as in a comic strip a few vertical lines can form a forest.
Well then, onto the third dimension: We sneak in, keep close to the walls on which we hang sheets that used to be trees. Welcome to the hideous garden.
