Presentation of our Artists-in-Residence 2014

Chris Bell (AUT/USA) and Onno Dirker (NL)

30 August 5 October 2014

Since 2005 the Kuenstlerhaus Dortmund has been offering an artist-residency taking place in the months of June to August, to all artists from abroad working in any field of the fine arts. This year we are happy to welcome the Australian born artist Chris Bell who is currently living in California.

Our second guest, Onno Dirker from Den Haag, is visiting the Ruhr area with his project Außenbahn, which was developed in the context of a cooperation of the Kunstverein Bochum and the Kuenstlerhaus Dortmund.

Both artists present the results of their artist residency simultaneously accompanying the exhibition Utopisten und Weltenbauer in the exhibition space of the Kuenstlerhaus.

Chris Bell (AUS/USA) will be staying from mid July at the Kuenstlerhaus Dortmund. At the end of his stay he presents an installation with two newly developed counting devices allowing for a more direct experience of large numbers: that of the global births per hour compared with that of bullits produced globally per hour.
> more about Chris Bell

Onno Dirker (NL) deals with topographical structures, historical events or social processes. His body of work contains installations, videos and performances, which are often located in public space.
His cross-municipal project Außenbahn focuses on the southern and eastern regions of the Ruhr area, especially on the Ruhr and the Dortmund-Ems-Canal.
Onno Dirker concentrates on the analysis and design of public space in its widest sense. The spirit of the location lies at the heart of his work. Any landscape is formed by a myriad of layers, whether they are cultural or economic, physical or metaphysical. The approach chosen by the artist is a phenomenological and research oriented one, which means he never commences a project from a set viewpoint or hypothesis. Aussenbahn complements as an associated project the residency-project Canale Grande, which is held simultaneously at the Rhine-Herne-Canal by KunstVereineRuhr in cooperation with Urbane Künste Ruhr in the context of Kulturkanal.2014.
